The physiological importance of gasotransmitter H₂S  as has been appreciated for only about the past decade or so. The H₂S -catalyzing enzymes (cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS), cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST)) are differentially expressed in cardiovascular, neuronal, immune, renal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, reproductive, liver, and endocrine systems and affect the functions of these systems through the production of H2S.

Alternations of H₂S  metabolism lead to an array of pathological disturbances in the form of hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart failure, cirrhosis, inflammation, neurodegenerative disease, erectile dysfunction, and asthma, to name a few.
